At the age of 58, Josef sold his farm in the Radobytce, Pisek District of Bohemia, and with his family immigrated to America. Josef had served in the army of Franz Josef of Austria-Hungary. His two sons were becoming of military age and would be required to also serve in the army. Rather than allow them to serve he immigrated to America. He arrived at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland on 2 Nov 1887 aboard the Steamship Weser accompanied by his six children. His wife, Marie, had become ill as they were leaving Bohemia and did not accompany her family. She came to America a short time later. The family did not stay in Baltimore but came to Cleveland, Ohio, where they permanently settled.
Josef was a farmer in Bohemia but worked as a laborer upon his arrival in Cleveland. He is listed as a laborer in the stove works in the 1900 Census. On 13 Oct 1892, Josef, declared his intention to become a citizen of the United State to the Court of Common Pleas in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. On 9 Sep 1896 he petitioned that same court to be admitted as a naturalized citizen of the United States and was granted citzenship by the court on 16 Oct 1896.
Josef died at age 72, on 8 July 1902 of pluritis. He is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio with his wife, Marie.
