He married Lora Gladys Fitchett, daughter of John Samuel Fitchett and Maggie Bell Gibbs, on 7 October 1920.¹ Louis died on 25 February 1946 at New York, New York, United States, at age 56. His body was buried in February 1946 at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Madison, Florida, United States.

     Lora was born on 30 November 1903 at Dublin, Laurens, Georgia, United States. She was the daughter of John Samuel Fitchett and Maggie Bell Gibbs. She married Louis Vanzant Goodbread, son of William Hardee Goodbread and Josephine Townsend, on 7 October 1920.¹

     Mary was born on 9 July 1891 at Cherry Lake, Madison, Florida, United States. She was the daughter of William Hardee Goodbread and Josephine Townsend. She married Charles Wesly Henderson, on 29 October 1919.¹ Mary died in 1951 at Miami, Dade, Florida, United States.

     Francis was born on 18 September 1893 at Cherry Lake, Madison, Florida, United States. She was the daughter of William Hardee Goodbread and Josephine Townsend. She married Charles Maywald.¹ Francis died on 19 August 1989 at Rockledge, Brevard, Florida, United States, at age 95. Her body was buried on 22 August 1989 at Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, Orange, Florida, United States.

     William was born on 30 June 1896 at Cherry Lake, Madison, Florida, United States. He was the son of William Hardee Goodbread and Josephine Townsend. He married Cleo Bell Fitchett, daughter of John Samuel Fitchett and Maggie Bell Gibbs, on 23 September 1917 at Dublin, Laurens, Georgia, United States.¹ William died on 7 May 1944 at Orlando, Orange, Florida, United States, at age 47.

     Grace was born on 9 October 1886 at Cherry Lake, Madison, Florida, United States. She was the daughter of William Hardee Goodbread and Josephine Townsend. Grace died on 31 July 1895 at Cherry Lake, Madison, Florida, United States, at age 8.

     He married Mary Elizabeth Goodbread, daughter of William Hardee Goodbread and Josephine Townsend, on 29 October 1919.¹

     Gladys was born on 18 December 1923 at Dania, Broward, Florida, United States. She was the daughter of Louis Vanzant Goodbread and Lora Gladys Fitchett. She married Jack Caldwell Smith, son of Harry Paull Smith and June Edwards, on 28 August 1940 at Sanford, Seminole, Florida, United States.¹
     Gladys's occupation: Travel Agent.

     Elinor was born on 14 December 1926 at Hollywood, Broward, Florida, United States. She was the daughter of Louis Vanzant Goodbread and Lora Gladys Fitchett. She married Reuben West Bishop, on 16 November 1944 at Folkston, Charlton, Georgia, United States.¹

     Jack was born on 8 September 1920 at Cumberland, Allegany, Maryland, United States. He was the son of Harry Paull Smith and June Edwards. He married Gladys Patricia Goodbread, daughter of Louis Vanzant Goodbread and Lora Gladys Fitchett, on 28 August 1940 at Sanford, Seminole, Florida, United States.¹ Jack died on 2 August 1998 at Edgewater, Volusia, Florida, United States, at age 77.
     Jack's occupation: Sales.

     He married June Edwards.¹

     She married Harry Paull Smith.¹

On Monday, April 30, we lost a great man. There are no words to describe the void that now exists in John Louis Smith's absence. A devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, he was the core of our family. He was so many things to so many people, but to his family he was a hero. He always had an answer to every question, and a solution to any problem.

His greatest desire was to be with his family as much as possible, and we were always happy to be at his side. Whether we were on his farm in Virginia, on his dock on Sanibel Island, or at a restaurant in New York City; he was happiest as long as the light of his life, his beloved wife, was next to him. He was the bright spot at any party and one of the best storytellers on the planet; he could command a room with his gentle manner and wide smile.

We are absolutely devastated to have lost such a loving and generous man. His spirit can be seen everywhere on his farm, from the vegetables that he planted himself, to the vibrant glass sculptures that he chose. But mostly, we see him in every flower and in every living thing that he nourished.

We will forever live in his honor, and we will strive to make sure that our every action is a reflection of the wisdom that he imparted.

Mourning him are his loving wife, Elisabeth Vegard Smith; daughters, Sonja Vegard Fallon and Christina Vegard Anderson; sons-in-law, Andrew Fallon and Simon Anderson; grandchildren Dylan Elisabeth Anderson, John Harlan Anderson and Finn Edward Fallon. Countless friends can join us in knowing that we were truly blessed to have known such an incredible man.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at The Sanibel Community Church. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to the American Diabetes Association.
