Angus Morgan Shirah Jr.
M, b. 7 April 1918, d. 17 November 1977
Angus was born on 7 April 1918 at Jakin, Early Co., Georgia. He married Beatrice Lorraine Borland, daughter of John Overton Borland and Eliza Delena Arnold, on 14 December 1941 at South Mills, North Carolina.1 Angus died on 17 November 1977 at Tallahassee, Leon Co., Florida, at age 59. His body was buried on 19 November 1977 at Memory Gardens, Tallahassee, Leon Co., Florida.

Education: 1925-1928 Bellinger Hill School, Montgomery, AL 1928-1929 Carter Hill School, Montgomery, AL 1929-1931 Capitol Heights School, Montgomery, AL 1931-1933 Harmony School, Troy, AL 1933-1934 Woodlawn & Ramsey High Schools, Birmingham, AL (Note: Ramsey was a magnet type school and Angus was selected to attend) 1934-1938 Rehobeth High School, Dothan, AL (did not graduate)
In March 1938 he enlisted in the Navy in Macon, GA. He visited different parts of the nation and of the world. Early assignments were in aviation units attached to aircraft carriers where he advanced rapidly in ratings. Shortly after WWII began, he was awarded the rating of Chief Petty Officer and 2 years later (2-15-44) he was commissioned an Ensign. Some unusual war experiences were: Marshall & Gilbert Island Raids - 1942 (USS Yorktown CV-5) Battle of Coral Sea - 1942 (UT-5, USS Yorktown CV-5) Battle of Steward Island - 1942 (USS Enterprise CV-6) Occupation of Solomon Island - 1942 (USS Saratoga CV-3)
He was decorated with PUC with 1 star (USS Enterprise) and a Good Conduct Medal.
He joined the F&AM of Alabama in 1945 and the Scottish Rite of Freemason in 1947.
On January 30, 1959, Angus received his State Certificate of High School Equivalency through the US Navy. On July 1, 1964, Angus was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy with a commission of Lt. Commander. He was released in Norfolk, VA. He then moved the family to Tallahassee, FL to attend FSU and graduated on June 13, 1970 with a Batchelor's Degree in Social Studies Education. He received a teacher's certificate and began teaching at Amos P. Godby High School in September of 1970. He continued teaching until April of 1977 when he became ill with cancer and then died November 17, 1977.
