John was born circa 1765. He was the son of "Progenitor" Brannen. He married an unknown person circa 1785. John died circa 1829 at Screven Co., Georgia.1
Biography of John Brannen:
The earliest record we have found for John Brannen is a deed dated 17 October 1792 where in James Scott, planter, of Effingham Co., sold to John Waters, planter, for 30 pounds, 100 acres in Effingham Co. adjoining land of William O'Bryan, Joseph Humphrey and John Waters, on s. side of Brier Creek, purveyed from John Brannen to John Waters. Wit: Richard Bryan, Timothy Prince, Sarah Scott. This deed was recorded 18 Sep 1799, 7 years after it was prepared. [Screven Co. Georgia DB A-176]. This suggests that John Brannen owned these 100 acres at a date earlier than 1792 thus indicating he was in the Briar Creek area of Screven Co. before 1792.
On 14 Jan 1801 William Murphrey and wife, Ameley sold to John Brannan for $130, 300 acres of land, lying and being in the County of Screven. Wit: Esther Warren, Charles Warren. Rec 10 May 1802. [Screven Co. GA DB A-316]
On 24 December 1802 Benjamin Greene sold to John Brannen for $200, 200 and a quarter of an acre, 30-ft front on the creek as landing, joining Brier Creek, the lower part of a 700 acre tract originally granted to John C. Humphreys, adjoining lands of Thomas Brannen on the w. William Miller on the e., Briar Creek on the s. Wit: McKeen(?) Greene, Thos. Brannen. Rec: 3 Nov 1803 [Screven Co. GA DB A-353] This deed suggests a connection between John Brannen and Thomas Brannen.
The following land lottery entries show John to have won land in the Baldwin and Wilkinson County Georiga:
John Brannon of Williamson Mil. Distr. in Screven Co. Ga. won Lot 222, District 9 in Baldwin Co. Ga
John Brannen of Williamson Mil. Distr. in Screven Co. Ga. won Lot 222, District 9 in Baldwin Co. GA. [Lucas -1807 Land Lottery of Ga.]
On 8 Jan 1807 John Brannen, of Ga. Screven Co, conveys to Hugh Brannen of GA. Screven Co., a tract containing 190 acres lying and being at the fork of Savannah River and Brier Creek, bounded NE by vacant land, SW by Stafford land, and NW by Johnstons and Hezlers land. Wit: George Zeagler, Thos. Brannen [Screven Co. GA DB A-525] This deed suggests that Hugh Brannen is likely the eldest son of John Brannen as who else but a son would a father convey land to. This also suggests that Hugh is at least 21 years of age and likely was born about 1785.
The next record we found is in an entry in Screven Co. Georgia Court Minutes dated 7 Sep 1829 where in James Brannen is appointed guardian of Bryant Brannen, minor and orphan of John Brannen, deceased. Zacheus Long and James W. Kittles securities. [Screven Co. GA Minutes Book C p. 6.] In addition a deed dated 18 Jan 1830 shows that James Brannen, Rachel Brannen and James Brannen as guardian for Bryan Brannen sell land to Hope Brannen, as common owners. [Screven Co GA DB N-11.] These two deeds suggest that John Brannen died befor 7 September 1829 and that he had children James, Rachel and a minor child, named Bryant.
These court records suggest John Brannen had at least three children, James, Rachel and Bryant. It is clear that by the mid 1830's, James, Rachel and Bryant are living in Lowndes County Georgia near Thomas Brannen (1794-1865). James and Bryant's names are found serving in the Florida Indian Wars in the 1835-1840 period. There are records of Rachel in Jefferson and Madison County up to 1847 and James and family appear on the 1850 Census of Madison County, Florida next door to Thomas Brannen (1794).
