     Joseph was born on 19 March 1827 at Lowndes Co., Georgia.¹ He was the son of Allen Townsend and Sarah Briant. He married Eda Henretta Campbell, daughter of Archibald B. Campbell and Keturah Rowell, on 16 September 1852 at Madison Co., Florida.² He married Gracie Brown, daughter of Uriah Brown and Mary May, on 19 August 1858 at Madison Co., Florida.³ Joseph died on 4 December 1902 at Madison, Madison Co., Florida, at age 75.⁴ His body was buried in December 1902 at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Madison, Madison Co., Florida.

Biography of Joseph Townsend:

Joseph lived near Cherry Lake in Madison County in the same community where he grew up. He was a farmer and highly respected citizen. Joseph enlisted as a private on 28 Feb 1863 in Company E of the 11th Florida Infantry of the Confederate Army at Madison, Florida. His record shows he was "detailed to drive beef cattle on 15 May 1864". He died 4 Dec 1902 at age 75 and is buried next to his wife Gracie in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Madison, Florida.
