Taylor R. Scott
M, b. circa 1807, d. 1877
Taylor was born circa 1807 at South Carolina.1 He married an unknown person circa 1824 at South Carolina. He married Mary (--?--), , circa 1832 at South Carolina. Taylor died in 1877 at Miller Co., Georgia.2
Biography of Taylor R. Scott:
The earliest record we have on Taylor R. Scott is his listing as Head of Family in Orange Parish, Orangeburg District, South Carolina in the 1830 Federal Census. The listing shows one male age 20-30 (Taylor b. c. 1808), one male age under 5 (possibly son Joseph) and two females, one age 20-30 the other under 5. The older female is Taylor's unknown first wife. A search of Orangeburg Co. records reveled nothing further on this family probably because most courthouse records were burned in 1865. However, the unusual first name of Taylor as well as other data showing that he and some of his children being born in South Carolina suggest that this record is indeed referring to Taylor of this genealogy.
The next earliest record is for Taylor Scott, Head of Family, in Crawford Co., Georgia in the 1840 Census. It shows 5 males, one age 30-40 (Taylor) two age 5-10 (Samuel and Stephen) two age under 5 (J. W. and Peter). The 1840 census also shows three females, one age 30-40 probably Taylor’s second wife Mary, one age 10-15 (Malinda) and one age 5-10 (Martha). Taylor and family are found in the 1850 Census of Randolph Co., Georgia, the 1860 Census of Calhoun Co., Georgia, and the 1870 Census of Miller Co. Georgia. He obviously, moved around a bit.
While in Randolph County, he likely lived in the 1154 Military District, which encompasses the Town of Dawson. Dawson was located in Randolph County until 1856 when Terrell County was formed out of Randolph and Dawson became the county seat. His name appears in four places in Melton and Raines History of Terrell County Georgia. The first is as a Justice of the Peace in 1856, the second is in 1858 as a Road Commissioned in Militia District 1154, the third is in 1856 -57 where he is listed as having performed five marriages as a J. P. The fourth when he bought a lot in the City of Dawson from R. M. Carter in 1857. He apparently left Terrell County moving to Calhoun County, Georgia about 1858.
The very last record we have found of Taylor is in The History of Miller County Georgia 1856-1980 where on page 70 under a listing of events which occurred in 1877 we find "Other news from Miller County was published, e. g., "Dr. B. F. Lennard married Mrs. Fannie Tabb of Early County; T. R. Scott died; Mart Adams became know as the 'wart doctor': and Counce Sheffied bought a barrel of cherry brandy." This sadly, is the only record of Taylor's passing. We were not able to locate his grave or find any gravestone in Miller County, although we did find the grave of his son, Stephen in the Roberts Cemetery, 6 mile north of Colquitt on US 27 on west side of highway. In 1870, Taylor was living in the Town of Colquitt and was likely buried near town, although he could have been buried in the Roberts Cemetery.
