By 1885 he is shown in the Cleveland City Directory as a laborer living at 13 Third Ave. (now Gertrude Ave.) In 1889 he is listed as a laborer living at 128 Vergennes near Fleet Ave. By 1893 he is listed as a Foreman while still living on Vergennes. He and his family are found in the 1900 U. S. Census of Cuyahoga County living at 55 Third Avenue. His occupation is "Foreman Wire Mill" . The 1910 Census finds him and his family at 6007 Gertrude Ave. His occupation is "Fireman Steel Co."(Third Avenue was changed to Gertrude Ave sometime in the 1910-1920 time period) By 1920 he is found as a retired widower, living with two of his children, Alma and Edmund at 6007 Gertrude Ave. In most of these census records, John indicates he was born in Poland/Russia and that his native tongue was German. The 1880 Census in particular indicates that his mother and father were born in Wurtenburg, Germany, although he indicates he was born in Poland.
