Hugh Hadden, a pioneer of Madison County, Florida was born in South Carolina about 1818. The names of his parents are not known at this time. Hugh served in the Florida Indian Wars as a private as follows: He enrolled 10 Dec 1835 in Capt. Thomas Livingston's Company, Taylor's Battalion, Middle Florida Mounted Volunteers mustering out on 25 Feb 1836. He enrolled at Tallahasse on 7 Mar 1836 for 4 months in Lt. Smyli's detachment (McCant's Battalion) 12 Reg't, 2nd Brigade, Florida Militia mustering out 7 Jul 1836 at Station Fort Dade. He enrolled in Captain Thomas Langford's Company, Florida Mounted Volunteers on 4 Sep 1839 at Camp Collins for 6 months mustering out on 29 Nov 1839 at Camp Collins. ["Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served in Organizations From the State of Florida During Florida Indian Wars" NARA Microfilm Publication M-1086, rolls 34 and 42.] He claimed to have served in Capt. William Townsend's Company of Florida Mounted Volunteer enlisting 1 Mar 1836 for 4 months being honorably discharged at Ft. Dade 1 July 1836. A letter signed by Lt. James Smyli verified this although the war department could not find his name on Capt. Townsend Muster Rolls. None the less, for his service he applied for a bounty land warrant on 16 Nov 1850 under Act of Congress dated 28 Sep 1850 and received Warrant # 12704 on 31 Dec 1850 for 160 acres of land. [Indian War Bounty Land Files - Warrant 12704 - Soldier Hugh Hadden - in possession of National Archives - Washington, D. C.]

Hugh homesteaded his land and raised his family in Madison County, Florida. He first bought land in Madison County on 25 Jan 1840. [Madison County, Florida Deed Book B, Page 108] He died around midnight on 17 Sep 1886 being 68 years of age. He is buried in a fenced in enclosure in Pine Grove Church Cemetery next to his wife Lucy. His will, dated 13 Apr 1880, proved 22 Sep 1886 distributed his estate to his wife and children which he had not already given land to.
