     Tomasina Amelia Dudley was born on 8 January 1879 at Marlboro Co., South Carolina.¹ She was the daughter of Thomas E. Dudley and Amelia W. Townsend. Tomasina Amelia Dudley died on 17 December 1881 at Marlboro Co., South Carolina, at age 2.²

     Cloannah was born circa 1743 at Bertie Co., North Carolina. She was the daughter of William Duggan and Mary Smithwick. She married William Cone, , circa 1770 at Bertie Co., North Carolina.²

     Elizabeth was born circa 1745 at Bertie Co., North Carolina. She was the daughter of William Duggan and Mary Smithwick. She married Benjamin Hardison, , circa 1775 at Bertie Co., North Carolina.²

     John was born circa 1680. He married Alice (--?--), .¹ John died circa 1740 at Bertie Co., North Carolina.

      It is fairly certain that John
Duggan
(c.1680-c.1740) is the father of the John and William who appear in Bertie, Tyrell, and Martin County, North Carolina records between 1731 and 1763. It is known that John and William were brothers and a lawsuit against John
Duggan, Jr. in 1740 in Tyrell County [Betty Fagan
Burr - Abstracts - Tyrrell County North Carolina Minutes - Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1735thru 1754 Book 1. p. 88] suggests that this John Jr. was the son of John (c1680-c1740). This is supported further by the naming patterns of the children and their being in the same proximity. It is further, assumed that Thomas was also a brother based on proximity and naming patterns and all were the sons of John. The earliest record of a John
Duggan is dated 1662 in Northumberland District, Virginia where one Jno.
Duggan was brought over by Richard
Nelmes. This John could be the grandfather of John
Duggan (c.1780-c.1740), although there is no proof of this. Furthermore, it is possible that he was the "John
Duggin who, with his wife, Alice had their son Thomas baptized on 8 August 1714 in Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia is the John

      The earliest record of John Duggan in North Carolina is recorded in Chowan Precinct on 17 Jul 1719 when a John
Duggal sold Peter Gray a tract of land in Cashie Neck on the south side of Kesiah (Cashie) River in Chowan Precinct. [Johnston - Thomas Hooks p. 107] It is assumed that John was born circa 1680 and died circa 1740 based on the lawsuit of John, Jr. mentioned above.

     John was born circa 1710. He was the son of John Duggan and Alice (--?--). John died in March 1763 at Tyrrell Co., North Carolina.

     Martha was born circa 1750 at Bertie Co., North Carolina. She was the daughter of William Duggan and Mary Smithwick. She married Allen Hardie, , circa 1776 at Edgecombe Co., North Carolina. Martha died before 1797 at Edgecombe Co., North Carolina.
     
Biography of Martha Duggan:

Martha Duggan is clearly the daughter of William Duggan and Mary Smithwick. We believe that Martha Duggan is the Martha that married Allen Hardie about 1776. Our belief is based on the following:
      Allen and Martha Hardie sold 180 acres of land in Martin County, North Carolina on the south side of Gardner's Creek to Josiah
Smith "except the lot on Gardner's Creek given by Edmund
Smithwick Esq. to his Children as will appear by his will" on 12 November 1787. [Martin County, NC Deed Book 6:496] No record could be found on how Allen and Martha acquired this land. A reading of the Will of Edmund Smithwick, which was dated 11 May 1774, and proved July 1774, [Martin County, NC WB 1 387-395] shed no light on exactly which land Allen and Martha described in their deed of 12 November 1787. However, this reference to the Edmund Smithwick Will clearly shows a strong relationship to the Smithwicks. In addition, William Bennett in his "Smithwick Genealogy" in the book "Hugh Smithwick Descendants" provides amble evidence that Edmund Smithwick was involved in many land transactions and owned properties in Bertie, Martin and Tyrell Counties. Edmund had also given or dispensed land on a number of occasions to close friends and relatives. It is thus possible that his grand neice, Martha Duggan was the recipient of that generosity after, Martha's father, William Duggan, or her mother Mary Smithwick, had died after 1754.

      The other indication that Martha Hardie is a Duggan is found in the book"Thomas Hooks, 1730-1803" by Coy Johnson wherein is included in "A Memorial to Ivy W. Duggan, A.M., LL.D," published in 1917, apparently at Atlanta, Georgia by unknown author. It contains some early history of the Duggan's which indicates that "Martha (Pattie) Duggan married --?-- Hardee, according to the "Memorial" account. It is believed he was Allen Hardee who was baptized Aug. 14, 1802, at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Warthen. " Johnston, "Thomas Hooks" ] (In the book "Thomas Hinds Duggan" by Alice Duggan Gracy the author cites the author of the "Memorial" as Mell L. Duggan.

      The name Duggan shows up as a middle name in two of the grandchildren of Allen and Martha Hardie. The grandchildren are: William Duggins Hardie (grandson) and Harmon Dugan Hardie (great grandson). Of course, Allen and Martha had a son named William, perhaps named after her father, William Duggan.

The above is the basis for showing that Martha is the daughter of William Duggan and Mary Smithwick.

      Martha probably died in Edgecombe County, North Carolina before Feb 1797 based on her name and signature not being on a deed wherein Allen sold 200 acres of land. Her signature was on all previous deeds, so it is assumed she died prior to 1797. Also no record of her in Georgia with Allen has been found.

     Phereby was born in 1742 at Bertie Co., North Carolina. She was the daughter of William Duggan and Mary Smithwick. She married Benjamin Manning, , circa 1765 at Bertie Co., North Carolina.² She married William Hyman, , circa 1787 at North Carolina.¹

     Sarah was born circa 1746 at Bertie Co., North Carolina. She was the daughter of William Duggan and Mary Smithwick. She married (?) Anderson, .²

     Thomas was born on 8 August 1714 at Middlesex Co., Virginia. He was the son of John Duggan and Alice (--?--). He married Mary (--?--), .¹ Thomas died in June 1754 at Tyrrell Co., North Carolina, at age 39.
     Thomas's occupation: Planter.

     William was born circa 1712. He was the son of John Duggan and Alice (--?--). He married Mary Smithwick, daughter of John Smithwick, circa 1741 at Bertie Co., North Carolina.² William died in 1754 at Bertie Co., North Carolina.

      The earliest record of William
Duggan is a deed dated 7 September 1731 in Bertie County, North Carolina where John and William
Duggan bought 620 acres of land for 250 pounds from Edmond Smithwick. William sold his half interest in this land on 4 Mar 1750 to John
Duggan. William died in the early part of 1754 in Bertie County intestate. His wife, Mary, petitioned the August Court for Administration of her husband's estate which was granted. The final record of his estate papers list his children which are listed below. [Gracy -
