Biography of Thomas Peter Donaldson:
"Thomas Peter Donaldson married Eliza Cathryn Poole,
around 1884, for my father was their first born, and he was born
February 7, 1885. Eliza Poole was the daughter of William Poole,
and was born in Salem, Alabama in Lee County. Her father was a member of the Confederate Army and was killed at the battle of the Crater in Petersburg, Virginia. The Union Army couldn't break through the defense that the Confederate Army had thrown up, so a Union Officer from Pennsylvania who was in command. of an outfit made up of Pennsylvania Coal miners. They dug a tunnel underneath the barricade, and put several tons of black powder and set it off. When it blew the Union sent an outfit of Negro soldiers through the hole to trap the Confederates. When they got inside the Crater, it was too deep for them to get out and the Confederates held the high ground. A lot of close hand to hand fighting took place and William Poole was stuck in the back with a bayonette or a sword and wounded. Gangrene set in the wound and he died. A fellow Alabaman, by the name of Green Fowler, wrapped him in a quilt and buried him, so that he wouldn't be just thrown in a pit with several others, which was the policy at that time. Dave Poole, who was Williams brother had William Pooles children, and it was said that he wasn't good to them, William Pooles wife, had a brother by the name of John Bishop living in Coffee County and after his sister died, he went and got the children and raised them along with his own. All together he raised five girls, orphaned by the war, as well as his own. Thomas Peter Donaldson and ELiza Poole had nine children. (Note Pearlie Mae Donaldson Ramsey, states ten )."
