James Joseph Caulk - ca. 1890
     James was born on 2 May 1829 at Marlboro Co., South Carolina. He was the son of Daniel Caulk and Clara (--?--). He married Mary Ann Townsend, daughter of Allen Townsend and Sarah Briant, on 14 February 1850 at Madison Co., Florida.1 James died on 19 April 1891 at Madison Co., Florida, at age 61.2 His body was buried in April 1891 at Pine Grove Church Cemetery, Madison Co., Florida.
     James's occupation: Farmer.
Biography of James Joseph Caulk:

James Joseph, or Joe, as he often appears in records, left his birthplace in Marlboro District, South Carolina at age 17. He traveled with the family of his sister, Cynthia Ann and her husband Elkanah Cottingham. The travelers arrived in Madison County Florida on 7 Jan 1847. This is based on the Elkanah Cottingham Family Bible that has the following statement:

"E. Cottingham Removed From Marlborough South Carolina leaving Carolina Decem 13 in the year 1846 arived in Florida January the 7 in the year 1847"

James Joseph enlisted as a private in Capt. Charlie Begg's Company, 4th Florida Battalion of Confederate States of America Army on 28 Feb 1863 at Madison, Madison Co., Florida for the period of the War. He was 34 years of age and had 6 children and his wife to support at the time. He was appointed 3rd Sergeant on 15 Mar 1863. He went to Virginia where his company became Company E. of the 11th. Florida Infantry (Finegan's Brigade) of the Confederate Army. He was assigned to the Pioneer Corp in Virginia in Nov 1864. He "got his foot cut in too by an ax" while building quarters and was admitted to 1st Div. General Hospital, Howard Gen. in Richmond, Va. 31 Dec 1864. He was furloughed from Hospital 9 Feb 1865. He was listed as a prisoner of war surrendering to Brig. Gen. E. M. McCook by Maj. Gen. Sam Jones, CSA at Tallahassee, Florida on 10 May 1865. He was paroled 11 May 1865 to his home in Madison County, Florida. He was 5 ft. 11 inches tall, had dark skin & eyes and black hair.

James Joseph died 19 Apr 1891 in Madison Co., Florida. He is buried in Pine Grove Church Cemetery next to his wife Mary Ann. Many of their children are buried nearby.

He married Florence Loraine Boyett, daughter of Edward Jasper Boyett and Mary Alderman. James died on 1 July 1934 at Lake Park, Lowndes Co., Georgia, at age 46.2 His body was buried in July 1934 at Lake Park Cemetery, Lowndes Co., Georgia.
