William Wiley (1734-1783) of Virginia Tree
George was born circa 1756 at Virginia.1 He was the son of William Wiley and Eleanor (--?--). He married Frances Stanfield, daughter of Thomas Stanfield and Elizabeth (--?--). George died in January 1806 at Greene Co., Georgia. His body was buried in January 1806 at Greene Co., Georgia.
     George's occupation: Farmer/Soldier.
Biography of George Wiley:

George Wiley was born about 1756 in Virginia, the exact place is not known. The earliest record of George found is where he was a purchaser from the estate of John Crider on 16 Oct 1772 in Halifax County. On 18 May 1775 his father, William, gave him 309 acres on Lawson Creek in Halifax County, Virginia. [Halifax County, Virginia Deed Book 9, p. 431]. On 18 Jul 1776, he sold 100 acres of this land on Lawson's Creek to Andrew Boyd. [Halifax Co. Virginia Deed Book 10, p. 75.] It is apparent that he sold this land just before his enlistment in the army.

He served in the 1st Virginia Regiment on Continental Establishment in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted as a private on 1 Aug 1776 and was a member of a company of men designated at various times as Captain John Flemings', Captain John Moss' and Captain Callohill Mennis' Company of the 1st Virginia Regiment. The 1st Virginia Regiment was commanded successively by Colonel Isaac Read, Lieutenant Colonel Green, Colonel James Hendricks and Colonel Richard Parker. The 1st Virginia Regiment served in Pennsylvania and New Jersey campaigns. He was appointed corporal about July 1777, promoted to sergeant about September 1777, and to sergeant major about March or April 1778. His name appears on 42 occasions in the records of the 1st Virginia Regiment. It last appearing on a field and staff muster roll for the month of April 1779, dated Middlebrook, New York, May 1779, which shows remarks: "On Comd to Georgia". His name appears on a record under the following heading "A list of Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment who have received Certificates for the balance of their full pay agreeable to an Act of Assembly passed November Session 1781" which shows he received the sum of L68, S18, D8 on 23 June 1783. [Compiled Service Records of Soldiers Who Served in the American Army During the Revolutionary War, NARA Microfilm M881, Roll 907] He was at Valley Forge in the spring of 1778 and may well have spent the winter there with General George Washington. The last federal record of May 1779 indicating "On Comd to Georgia" may indicate that he was transferred to Georgia to assist in the war to the South which was being actively pursued with success by the British in 1779-80. Three detachments of recruits were created for service in the Carolinas during rearrangements of the 1st Virginia Reg. which occurred at Middlebrook in May, 1779. It is very likely that George Wiley fought in those southern campaigns in 1779 and 1780.

By June of 1780 he must have been back in Halifax County, Virginia as on 15 Jun 1780 George sold 200 acres on Lawson's creek to John Martin [Halifax Co. Virginia Deed Book 12 p 29]. On 21 Jan 1781, George bought 460 acres of land on Butterrum Creek from Roger Atkinson. [Halifax Co. Virginia Deed Book 12, p. 117] This land is likely to have included the 240 acres of land that George's father, William Wiley deeded to Roger Atkinson on 21 Mar 1771.

It is also interesting to note that these purchases occurred before General Nathaniel Green retreated across the Dan River near South Boston being pursued by Lord Cornwallis. This would indicate that George was in Halifax County during the time Greene's and Cornwallis forces were passing through in February 1781. Thus by June 1780, George was likely out of the army having served his time. We often wondered how he felt when Cornwallis was using his father's Tavern as a headquarters and staying there during the period February 15 to 17 in 1781.

George Wiley is listed in the 1782 Census of Halifax Co. Virginia as being a household of 4 whites and 2 blacks. On 21 Aug 1783 and 18 Aug 1785, George attested to proving the wills of Stephen Towns and Peter Rogers, respectively in Halifax County, Virginia. On 28 July 1788 he appraised the estate of John Martin in Halifax County.

George began to sell off his property Beginning in 1791 as on 25 Jul 1791 he sold 410 acres of land on Lawson's creek to Henry Hopson [Halifax Co. Virginia Deed Book 15, p 127.] and on 22 apr 1793 with another sale of 140 acres on Evans Creek to John Stanfield [Halifax County Virginia Deed Book 15, p 561]. His name last appears on the Tax rolls of Halifax County Virginia in 1793. That is likely the year that he moved his family to Georgia.

In 1800, George and his family are listed in the census of Oglethorpe County, Georgia. (This the only surviving Georgia county census of 1800). Records of his purchase of land in Georgia have not been found. The only record found is his will. He died in Green County, Georgia in January 1806 based on his will being recorded and proved there on 1 Feb 1806. His will reads as follows:

In the name of God, Amen,
I, George Wiley of the State of Georgia, County of Greene being weak in body yet of perfect understanding and memory do constitute this my last will and testament and as to my worldly Estate do dispose of in following manner (Viz.)      Signed H. Carleton, Jr. for T. Carleton, Clerk

Registered the First of Feby 1806.

George Wiley is very likely buried in Green County although there has been no grave marker found.
