Viola was born on 5 August 1860 at Elba, Genesee Co., New York.1 She was the daughter of Stephen Ackley Wicks and Christiana Haight. Viola died on 28 February 1939 at age 78. Her body was buried at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Elba, Genesee Co., New York.

She was educated in the district schools, Cary Collegiate Seminary at Oakfield, NY, Oakwood Quaker Seminary, then at Union Springs, NY and later located at Poughkeepsie, NY. She taught school for several years before her marriage. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Elba, the Ladies Aid Society and the Missionary Society. and had been teacher of the Parker Class of the Sunday School for 15 years. She was also a member of the Batavia Chapter, # 267, Order of the Eastern Star, The Republican County Committee and a charter member of the Elba Grange. In 1925 Viola was living with her son James and was listed on the census as a restaurnateur.
