Biography of Sarah Murphy: According to the "History of Stewart County Vol II" Sarah was the daughter of William Mulkey/Murphy of Washington County, Georgia. Sarah's maiden name was Murphy as proved by the Will and estate papers of William Murphy. of Washington County, Georgia as well as being listed in the "Haygood Family Bible". [Personal communication from Donna Sarchet of Plainview, Texas 6 Jan 1993] After the death of her first husband, Theophilus Hardie, Sarah married a neighbor, the Rev James Griffin, Sr. on 9 October 1835. Sarah and James Griffin had three children, Alexander b. 10 Aug 1836 Catharine Jane b. 12 Aug 1837 James Alamo, b. 1840 The Rev. Griffin died about 1843 and he is buried in the Old Union Church Cemetery in Stewart County. On 6 March 1837, Anselm L. Evans, a member of this church and probably a deacon, was made guardian of six of Sarah's minor children.
